Support for Ukrainian Scientists and Scholars

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many researchers, students and academic institutions have been profoundly affected by the ongoing war. The CERN Theory Department stands in solidarity with our Ukrainian colleagues and remains committed to supporting scientific collaboration, academic continuity and the mobility of researchers affected by conflict.

This page brings together information on support opportunities available through CERN and highlights external initiatives that provide assistance to Ukrainian scientists and scholars.

Support through CERN and the CERN Theory Department

The CERN Theory Department maintains an active short-term visitor programme and welcomes applications from researchers whose scientific activities have been disrupted by war or displacement.

CERN continues to support Ukrainian scientific activity and members of the Ukrainian scientific community through a range of measures and initiatives. Further information can be found on the CERN  Solidarity with Ukraine page. [home.cern]

International Support Resources

Several international organisations maintain up-to-date information on academic positions, fellowships, grants, hosting opportunities, and emergency support for researchers affected by the war.

For researchers and students

  • #ScienceForUkraine, a regularly updated database of academic positions, funding opportunities, and practical support for Ukrainian students and researchers. https://scienceforukraine.eu/
  • Scholars at Risk (SAR) [scholarsatrisk.org] : which supports threatened and displaced scholars through international academic networks.
  • Scholars at Risk Europe (Inspireurope+)
  • Institute of International Education – Scholar Rescue Fund
  • Science at Risk Emergency Office [science-at-risk.org] : emergency assistance and professional support for researchers affected by the war.

Numerous universities, funding agencies and research organisations worldwide maintain programmes supporting researchers affected by war and displacement. Given the rapidly evolving nature of these opportunities, we encourage researchers to consult the resources above for the most up-to-date information.
