TH Institutes mandate
Confirmed programs: 2013

General Presentation
TH institutes are extended workshops intended to structure the TH visitor programme around topical themes
In 2007 we have decided to restructure our Visitors program to increase its quality and impact. Now that we are entering the LHC era, we plan to focus and structure it accordingly. We are thus launching a "Theory Institute" at CERN with focused programs in High Energy Physics and related subjects. The guidelines below are tentative and we expect them to evolve into a satisfactory steady state as the program is put into practice. The ultimate aim is to make the best use of our resources and to share them with the community. We are also happy to coordinate our activities with those of other Institutes, Universities, or Research Centers whenever possible.
Organizers
The Institute would work by hosting programs in HEP and related areas. While the organizers can be from anywhere outside CERN, there should be a local staff member in the organizing committee of the program. This guarantees a smooth interaction with the CERN administration. We plan to have at least one dedicated person to handle the local organizational matters.
Scientific panel and application deadlines
The selection of proposed programs should be made by TH together with external advisors. We intend to have two meetings per year in conjunction with the meetings for Paid Scientific Associates. Hence the deadlines for applications should be at the end of March and September (this is a CERN-wide rule concerning Fellows and visitors entitled to salaries). This is important because some of the key organizers could besupported as Paid Scientific Associates and so receive salaries rather than per diems.
Budget
The program will be financed out of our existing Visitors budget, and we intend to dedicate a significant part of this budget once the program reaches cruising speed. Of course, since the programs will be announced at our web site, other visitors may apply to be here during the same time, and this may be paid in part with the remainder of the budget. The previously mentioned deadlines are foreseen so that some organizers and/or participants can also be paid a salary, in which case we have to present their candidatures to the CERN-wide meetings that take place only twice a year. Most participants will be paid either per diems from CERN-TH, or they will be covered by networks like RTN or by other funds.
Duration
Tentatively, we consider that the duration of each program should be between 1 and 3 months, although other durations can also be considered; specially if in conjunction with other conferences or meetings taking place at CERN.
Applications
We plan to have in the future an on-line application form at the bottom of this page, but in the mean time you can send mail to th.institute@cern.ch.
